Day 6 - aka Catching Up

Hello everyone and welcome to Day 6.

Today, I decided to spend a lot of time catching up on all the little things in my life that were beginning to snowball into something big:

- Clean my pad (Don't mean to brag or anything but it was starting to look very paleo)
- Get ahead on all the little things I need to finally file my taxes
- Buy Food! This is a food thing after all!
- Plan out the next few days very precisely (like a scientist) to keep my head above water!

And in true partially naked fashion, I tried to do this in the buff as much as possible. (Sorry Fred)

Enough of that!

It's eating time!!

Meal 1 - Tiurf dna stun ,sgge
What: .... .... same picture again?? It must be the same picture virus that's going around these days. You all should watch out for it!! Darn those hackers!
Verdict: Tasty tastersons.

After an early morning wake up and breakfast, it was off to work. I opted for no meals till 4, just snacking on mixed nuts to keep the hunger at bay:

Mixed Nuts
What: Mixed Nuts
Verdict: Nuts that are mixed. Fun to eat, especially when playing the try not to drop one as you eat game. Im - possible.
Squirrel Colour Commentating: *Squirrel voice* "Mixed nuts are delicious, but what about cupcakes?"

After work, I needed some time to just relax as this is technically the beginning of my "weekend" and I had been going at it non stop for the last few days. Ah yes! Before we get to the next meal, I have for you faithful readers a:

HEALTH UPDATE!!!

- *Health update jingle* (I don't know what it sounds like... make one up!! If none come to mind, use the sportscenter theme song! *first 8 seconds or so) -

De Nee Nee De Ne Neeee

I had spoken of light headedness on Sunday. Since then, I've felt it still, albeit to a lesser degree. After speaking with Mathieu, a wicked cross-fit instructor who teaches at my place of work and who has been following a paleo diet for a few years now, I was reassured that this was a normal process that occurs when the body is learning to adapt to a new energy source. This actually felt right and is an interesting thing to consider as I've already felt this type of light headedness back in the times when I didn't look twice at what I ate. Maybe it was a nutrition thing?

"Enough hypothesizing fool!"

Meal 2: Smoothie Time
What: Celery-Strawberry-Kiwi-Banana-Egg smoothie.
Verdict: A little something to hold me off until supper!

Which brings us to...

Meal 3: Wild Grouper with Salad
What: Wild Grouper baked with coconut oil, crushed almonds and dijon. Red cabbage, fermented sauerkraut and carrot salad topped with an olive oil/balsamic/lime vinaigrette.
Verdict: Old recipe + new fish = Still absolutely delicious. So easy and good, this takes 5 minutes to prepare, 15 minutes to cook. Wowow!!

Special Treat: SHAWN TEXTING!!

This is a real textversation!

Shawn: Check out Vitto's it's a butcher in the city they have grass fed. It's near St viateur I think google it.
Pete: Will do man. Is alcohol paleo in any form?
Shawn: Drink Vodka. Vodka soda with a lime!!

What can I say, this is the type of wisdom that I love. I'm waiting for the official verdict on whether alcohol is allowable during the 30 day purge though. Don't worry paleo fans, I'll keep you posted!

Question Time!

Before I sign out, I have a few questions for you!
- Anyone have any suggestions on delicious ways of marinating chicken? (keep it paleo yo')
- Any opinions on aluminum cast versus stainless steel when purchasing pots and pans?
- Where can I find a walnut cracker?

Thanks dudes!

  1. Hey Paleo Pete!

    You may be feeling light-headed because you're not eating enough- or enough of the right foods. I would highly recommend checking out Whole9's guidelines - they recommend limiting fruit and nuts and going all out with protein, veggies and good fats (we need to be seeing MORE AVOCADO, MORE COCONUT MILK, OLIVES).... you will lose a lot of weight at the rate you're eating, especially if you have a vigorous yoga practice. Strong is the new sexy and as a caveman you need a LOT of FOOD to stay strong and not skinny.

    As for alcohol, this all depends on the challenge you have set for yourself. You may want to cut it out completely for 30 days because again, it will only feed your sugar cravings. Robb Wolf suggests that if you do choose to consume alcohol, to have a NorCal margarita (1-2oz of tequila GOLD - not that clear Sauza crap - juice of one full lime and soda).. I have them now and I love them. If you have them earlier on, like happy hour, and follow up with a nice dose of protein and a fat, you're good to go. The reason why I personally do not choose vodka is because vodka is typically from a potato source and if I am not consuming potatoes on Paleo, why would I want to consume alcohol derived from potato?

    Cast-iron is better than aluminum cast but a lot more expensive (and probably heavier.. I actually got a great aluminum-cast grill pan and it's awesome - zero problems with flaking or whatever.. it was still like $50 or $60 because it's a good-quality one but yeah - shop around, read reviews.. a must for Paleo grilling inside if you don't have a BBQ (or during 3/4 of our lovely year in Montreal).

    As for chicken marinades.. this one is my favourite.. it's from the mom of one of my best friends.. it is called "ELIANE'S CHICKEN":

    (For about a pound and a half... cut boneless chicken breast into smaller pieces, slice width-wise if thick.. you can also use boneless thighs)

    In a bowl, combine:

    * 1 or 2 inches of minced, fresh ginger
    * 1 clove of garlic, minced or crushed
    * Juice of one lemon
    * 1.5 tsp oil (extra-virgin olive or sunflower)
    * 1 tsp dijon
    * 1.5 tsp paprika
    * 1.5 tsp ground black pepper
    * 1 tsp salt
    * A bit of water (just a small amount)

    Place chicken in bowl with marinate and mash, especially to coat with ginger and garlic in the bowl. Refrigerate either in bowl, covered, and mix every so often or place chicken and marinade into a good Ziploc bag and place on a plate in fridge. Best to marinate 24hrs but can be done in a couple of hours if in a jam (won't be nearly as good but it'll still be tasty).

    Best to grill but can bake if needed....... ENJOY!

    Thanks for the tip about Vitto's, Shawn! And Pete - you could probably get a nut-cracker at a kitchen appliance store!

    Have a great day and enjoy your Paleo treats :)

  3. Humm...

    I will go with Melanie about the light headness.. Since browsing (rapidly) on your blog their seems to have to many fruits and nuts at each and between meal...

    Alcool during a 30 days paleo challenge is a NO GO! It's still refined sugar at is best (sweet sweet best!)

    As for the craving and all, aim at the infamous 1gr of protein per pound of body weight. So if you weight, 165lbs, you should aim at 165 grams of protein a day. That will keep the hunger at bay and get you your vitamin, minerals requirement for the day. Go check FITDAY.com and geek out on the vitamin, mineral and macro-nutriment ratio for a day of eating.

    Keep up the challenge!
