Partial Nudity Please aka I Have Owned This Challenge

First things first:

PALEO CHALLENGE = DONE

Yesss


And it has proven be an amazing experience! What started as a side project quickly became a fascinating window through which to view the world... Nutrition is very interesting; It plays such a pivotal part in our everyday lives and yet it is so easy to overlook.

So... what next??

More blogging!! haha

My initial plan with this blog was to chronicle the highs and lows of this 30 day experience. I would like to now offer a reinterpretation of that intention: namely, to create a space offering a strong foundational tool for anyone looking to empower him or herself with information on nutrition.

Concretely, I will accomplish this by posting a series of 'closing off' posts:
- Food highlights: favorites, least favorites, pics of recent food ventures.
- Post-Paleo thoughts: How has my body reacted to food after a month of strict paleo?
- Resources: Everything you need in Montreal to find good food at the most competitive price. Also, awesome websites.
- Q&A if you peeps out there have any burning prehistoric questions!!

So, before we get to the nudie pics of post paleo goodness, I would like to state that the most 'challenging' thing in this whole experience was, by far, writing this blog. At times words would write themselves and at others it was a struggle to just find the time to get to the keyboard. Ultimately, writing made me sharp and much more thorough in this undertaking than I would have been without the blog. With this in mind, I would like to thank all of you readers and contributors for your support and ideas. You made this experience really special for me and kept me going when times were tough!

Verdict: Essentially, the after pics are the result of me following a 100% paleo inspired food regimen for 30 days, cutting carbohydrates, dairy, legumes and sugars au max and even limiting fruit (until the last week at least when I started going smoothie crazy). I actually exercised less over these 30 days than I did in the months preceding the challenge but remained fairly active.
Hairiness: Still apparent.
Underwear: Awesome.
Roomate Awkwardness Factor: Inexistent, Fred's schedule and mine didn't match up for the after pics. Somewhere, Fred is smiling.

Day 26 - One Day At A Time aka Many Questions

Why??

Why. Why. Why.

It is a powerful word. One that has been keeping my mind busy a lot over the past few days. Why am I doing this paleo challenge? Is this type of thing necessary? Does it matter in the long run? Will it have an impact? Why are we surrounded by advertisements promoting lifestyles that deliver the exact opposite of their promise of health and happiness?

And why do we tolerate this crap?

I don't want to say a given way is good or bad, I believe every person is entitled to make a personal choice based on their own best idea. The reality of life is that most people are unable to even begin to assume this responsibility. That's the tragic/frustrating part. People gobble up the popular opinion. And that is absolutely normal!! It's how we are programmed! If you want to eat fast food, fine. But at least know exactly what goes in there: the food, the advertisement, the financial incentives. It took me 28 years before I decided to empower myself with knowledge about nutrition. To look at every output of food stimuli thrown at me and ask myself, is this true? What is the message here? Where is it coming from? 28 years... How did it take so long??

This process has been very empowering.

This process has given me headaches.

It is a lot of work. It takes time. It takes dedication and today I felt spent and close to just flipping off this whole process. My saving grace is this blog, which has been an amazing outlet for me over the past month and has put me in touch with a great network of people offering me support and cool ideas for the paleo challenge. What's interesting is that the most challenging aspect isn't really putting in the time or doing the work, or eating the food (which is delicious) .. it's changing my habits. It is acknowledging the voice in my head that says "watch the hockey game, order the poutine..." and asking myself if this voice represents my real intention in life. Often times, taking the 'easy' route and just eating whatever is available, whatever is presented to me by an industry or a company that can afford awesome branding and marketing power (read: what I want to eat), is just so compelling. Making up your own mind, however, only offers personal gratification. So once again, thank you paleo blog. It has given me the support I needed through social interactions to stick to my  initial idea: see this to the end. It also gave me the love necessary to stay with something as counter current to mainstream trends as eating paleo. Support is important, seek it out!

What's amazing is that everyone one I have talked to about this way of eating has been very interested. People love to learn about this type of thing. People are interested in their health, in making good life choices. So what stops us from taking the initiative into our own two hands?

At the end of the day, I ask myself, does it even matter what I do, the choices I make? Does this really affect anything? Why am I doing any of this? It's a painful process that just makes the numbness of watching the TV that much more compelling.

I'm not quite clear about what I wanted to say here, but I needed to say it nonetheless. I think this is my biggest rant yet, haha. Maybe I just miss poutine? Who knows. Fuck it, moving on!

Meal 1 - Eggs n' Baky Baby
What: Eggs, Bacon, Celery, Grapefruit.
Verdict: As delicious as it sounds/looks like!

Meal 2 - Leftover Crock Pot Pork
What: Pork, Assorted Veggies, Deliciousness.
Verdict: Um... super tasty.
Random: Watch out, it's gonna spillllllll!!!!

At work today, it was the birthday of the very rad wind-surfing prodigy Amanda S. There was rockaberry cheesecake all over the place. I took one real good, close-encounter whiff of it. I stayed strong though. Razor's edge!

Meal 3 - Pete's Uber Pasta
Prep

 Final Product
What: Spaghetti Squash, Ground Beef, Zucchini, Mushrooms, Green Onions, Yellow Pepper, lots of Coconut Oil, Spices, Garlic, Tomato Sauce.
Verdict: Best ground meat recipe yet, tender, fat and juicy. I'm talking about food people!!!
Bonus: Lots of leftover meat sauce.


SUMMARY OF DAY 26

Ingredients:
- Protein: Eggs, Nuts, Ground Beef, Pork
- Fruits and Veggies: Zucchini, Carrot, Mushrooms, Green Onion, Celery, Grapefruit
- Fats: Coconut Oil, Bacon Fat.
- Spices, Garlic

Budget: 0$ spent

Hours Slept = 6 1/2



I'll end today with a quote from the movie Gladiator. It's from the scene where Proximus, the slave owner who bought and eventually released Maximus (aka Gladiator), is killed by roman soldiers. Right before he is stabbed in the ribs, he and Maximus exchange some final, fleeting words:

Day 25- The Last Week!! aka Go Out With A Bang!!

Yessssssss!

It is upon us, the final week of the paleo challenge!

It has been emotional; it has been tough; it has had epic highs and teary lows; it has been educational; it has had a large, some would say an impressively large, amount of nonsense... what a journey so far!!

It's not over yet, back to square one baby!

Meal 1 - The Classic
What: Grapefruit, 3 slice bacon, 4 eggs, tomato.
Verdict: Starts the day off right!

After Meal 1 I prepped the next three meals of the day:

Meal 2 - Smoothie
What: Frozen berries/pineapple/melon and 2 eggs.
Verdict: Smooth, fresh, tasty. Gives a surprising kick when you have removed most of the other carbs from your diet!

Meal 3 - Wild Salmon Salad
What: One bear, one wild Salmon.
Really, What: One can of wild salmon, kale, avocado, tomato, olive oil, balsamic, dijon.
Verdict: I was hungry, I didn't take a picture... I felt like a bear eating a wild salmon was a solid representation of what went down.

Meal 4 - Crock Pot 2.0

Step 1 - Prep
What: 1.6 kilo pork loin with bone, onion, carrot, zucchini, 12oz tomato sauce.

Step 2 - Work from 12-7 and Come Back

Step 3 - Appreciate...

... The Meat

... The Pot Mix

... And Three Meals Worth of Leftover
Verdict: All in all, this meal cost me about 10$ in food and maybe 20 minutes total in prep and cleaning. Also, WAS DELICIOUS!! Best bang for buck so far!


SUMMARY OF DAY 25

Ingredients:

- Protein: Eggs, Pork Loin, some Nuts, Can Wild Salmon
- Fruits & Veggies: Carrot, Zucchini, Onion, Kale, Avocado, Frozen Fruit, Grapefruit
- Can of Tomato Sauce, Olive Oil, Balsamic, Dijon, Salt, Pepper.

Budget:
- No money spent!

Hours slept = 8 1/2

Day 15 Flashback: CrossFit CapOP!!!

Actually, the title and pic are teasers. I did not actually practice cross fit during the "epic meeting of the paleo minds" last friday. I simply ventured out to CrossFit CapOp to meet and discuss with a certain Mathieu Dumontet.

So, what does this have to do with a Paleo Challenge Blog you may ask?

It just so happens that Mathieu aka 'Math' (phonetically 'Mat' - not the discipline where you... uhh... add stuff) is a paleo wizard. He has been eating paleo for a few years now, has read the books, done the.. ahem.. math and not only has a lot of interesting things to say about this way of life, but also happens to be generous with his time when dealing with eager, blog-writing, hungry-for-knowledge paleo noobies.

Here are some highlights of our conversation:

- Math helped me calculate that for one day, by eating about 1g of protein per lb in weight, I will be satiated. That means about 60g protein per meal which is about 1.6 lb of meat per diem.
- Math's top five veggies: mushrooms, sweet potato, bell peppers, onion and brocolli
- This is actually from a past conversation, but a typical day of food for Math:
Déjeuner:
4 oeufs cuits dans le gras de bacon, 3 tranches bacon, steak 4 oz, 1/4 de tasse de lait de coco, 12 pacanes, 12 noix de grenobles et 10 canberges seches
Diner:
5 oz de porc, 1/2 avocat, legumes varies en crudité
Souper:
steak 12oz, légumes variés sauté dans de l'huile de noix de coco

Day 20 - Look At Me I'm Beautiful!! aka Crock Pot!!

Hello hello


This post exists for the sole purpose of honouring my first, official, crock pot aka mijoteuse accomplishment!

First things first, what the heck is a crock pot?? You, reader, may already know the answer to this question but a few weeks ago, I myself was blissfully unaware of the existence of crock pots!! Essentially, a crock pot is a slow cooker. You put whatever you have to put inside, leave it on all day (choosing appropriate settings) and whatever cooks at a low heat! Awesomeness! Crock pots are a great tool to cook those 'less than choice' pieces of meat that are usually not as tender as higher priced pieces. The slow cooking tenderizes the meat and also creates some tasty broths.

Pete's First Crock Pot
What: Asparagus, Onion, Boeuf Bourgignon, Carrot, Zucchini, Garlic powder, Garlic, Salt, Pepper, Olive oil
Verdict: Fail!!! While the odour was amazing (as noticed by many of my work colleagues :) the settings I chose overcooked the meat. Very chewy. Lesson learnt! I'm already looking forward to my next crock pot experience!
Next Crock Pot Experience: A big assssss piece of pork loin I get for about 6$ (at 4$ a kilo).

Verdict: Worth every dollar, its quick, it saves a buck on meat, it opens up limitless possibilities and it sings you to sleep. Last thing was made up!

Day 17- What's Up Montreal!!

Hiya Gals and Guys,

Hope this finds everyone well!

And no, I have not melted away into frailty. The paleo diet has been sustaining me healthily over the last few weeks and I'm amazed that we are already at day17!

Here are some breakthroughs and breakdowns I've had over the last few days to keep you all in the loop!

Breakdowns
- Spending too much moolah for this to be a sustainable way of living with my current financial income.
- Organizing time and space has been challenging!
- I'm slacking in my blog entry production (but it's not because I don't love you!!)

Breakthroughs
- There are many resources out there that make this adventure a true possibility
- Everything is possible! As my friend Tara put it very eloquently during her Funky Friday yoga class on, umm.... Friday: We are all accustomed to our habits. Treading new ground may seem like a challenging new course, but that's just because we aren't accustomed to it!
- Relentlessness - This word is becoming the driving force behind my intentions. I simply will keep on doing!! Whatever happens!! With that in my pocket, all that's left is to keep asking the questions that will clarify my intentions! A life of discovery is out there! Be relentless!

What: Chicken marinated in garlic, ginger, oregano and olive oil. Broccoli, mushrooms and red onion.
Verdict: Marination is the preparation tool of the Gods. Very tasty.
I told you so: Levelling up!! Coming up in future posts, more marination, more awesomeness....
Particular Vernacular: This isn't really a Jambalaya as it does not contain stock nor rice! I substituted the rice for kale, that funky one of a kind lettuce thingy.

Day 13 - Leg-Grab-Towel-Turn!

Ultra post! 

I've been in uber information gathering mode over the last two days, figuring out some awesome ways to prepare paleo foods well at a redeemable price. In video game terms, this is called levelling up!

I'll be posting my findings very soon, as well as my master plan that will hopefully offer food enthusiasts everywhere some useful and inspiring... ummm.... food for thought.

If any of you follow NHL hockey, you are probably aware of the epic playoff series that just happened between the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins. It was hard fought, emotional, full of ups and downs and never, I'll say that again, never easy to watch. I think my heart actually stopped a few times and I know of at least one occasion when I curled up into a fetal position and had gentle spasms for a few minutes.

Ahh, the playoffs.

So for game 6, I had my friend Laurence over for Pete's Paleo Pasta!

What: Spaghetti Squash, Hot Pepper Tomato Sauce with sautéed zucchini, diced tomatoes, green onion and oregano.
Verdict: Would have eaten four plates of this. Reallllllllly tasty.


It turns out Laurence is the real deal when it comes to being a hockey fan, so she was psyched for the game.

It also turns out Laurence has the same type of uncontrollable, emotional, twitchy, nervous way of watching hockey that I do! Needless to say, we had a lot of fun watching this game together. We each brought our own personal superstitions that we felt would, I daresay, guarantee victory and, as it often happens when superstitious people meet, some new ones developed along the way.

At one point, any close call warranted that we both start doing the following leg-grab-towel-turn action to ward off evil spirits. Here is the sacred move demonstrated by the lovely Laurence aka Pauf:

Verdict: I think we spent half the game in this posture. No kidding. Habs fans, you are welcome for the victory, because it worked! Unfortunately, Laurence and I were not able to watch game 7 together, so I apologize for the both of us at not being able to work our magic into a series clinching victory. Monster props to our Habs for giving it all they had! And yes, I'll say it, congrats to Boston as well for coming out with the victory and moving on to the next round. Good luck!

Back to game 6! We celebrated being victorious with dessert!!!:

- My spending is out of control! another ~75$ on tuesday and 17$ yesterday. Paleo Xavier (my Paleo Challenge Brother) has sent me an interesting link and I plan on (prepare yourself for a POWER PUN....)........ cashing in on all this intelligence I'm gathering to save big bucks and still eat healthy.

- Spoiler: I'm meeting with Math from Crossfit CapOp tomorrow to talk paleo! He's put in a lot of time and work himself in finding out optimal ways of eating this way and has been following a paleo diet for a few years now so it should be an epic meeting of the paleo minds!!

Day 11 - Paleo Budgeting 101

Nous revoilà pour une autre journée!

Today we talk cash. Moneey. Molah. Snapzilles. Ok ok I made the last one up. In my paleo challenge interactions so far, budget has been a popular topic with people who have either heard of the paleo diet and are on the fence about it or others who are just curious about how much it costs to eat this way. I myself was very curious to learn the numbers as I have never really budgeted my food spending in the past.

So, here are the cold, hard numbers.. so far. Hopefully this will help us all clear the water and avoid the fate of this misguided prehistoric chap:

LE BUDGET (premier trimestre du challenge paleo)

- Day 1: 72$ - Veggies/Nuts/Stuff + 13$ - Fish
- Day 2: 6$ - Steak
- Day 3: 13$ - Veggies

- Day 5: 15$ - Restaurant
- Day 6: 43$ - Veggies/Meat
- Day 7: 20$ - Eggs n' Nuts

Pete's Corner
- My attitude so far has been: Just buy what you need, don't look at the price. This may have caused a certain inflation of the total spent $.
- Initial groceries included such extra spending as sauces and a spice.
- I've actually spent more than what is shown. Notably on various kitchen equipment.

30 Day Projection based on current numbers:
679$!!!
For a daily average of: ~ 23$


Verdict: TOO MUCHF;EAIFNE;FOIEJF;AIOJE;FOIAJFIEAJF;AIJE;FIJA!!!!!!!!!!111111111

For me, ideally, I am spending 300-400 $ tops on food a month. Mind you, I eat a lot. So this might have an impact on the results.


.....Time to update......

The POWERFUL INTENTIONS!!:

- Find a way to eat paleo @ 300$ a month


Here are my potential ideas on how to achieve this:
- Place a meat order from a farm and get better quality stuff at a lower/same price as what I can get in supermarkets (more quality - don't have to eat as much..)
- Less variety in the meats, stick with some solid winners at a good price.
- Choose wisely: Don't buy all veggies in bulk, some go bad and that's money down the drain.


I'll be asking around with my other paleo buddies and buddettes to see how much they spend on a monthly basis and hopefully that will shed some additional light on the topic.

I'd also be interested in finding out any numbers on how much you guys and gals out there on no particular diet spend on food in a typical month... It would be rad to compare all our numbers!! (And don't forget - Size doesn't matter; It's what you do with it that counts)

Day 10 - New Look and Some Tough Questions!

I'm back!

For this next week, I've decided to change the way I share through this blog. Instead of going through the whole day's menu as I've been doing so far, I will focus more on new recipes and dedicate posts to either answering questions or going a little deeper into discussing paleo friendly topics or the events of my day!

For those of you who really liked the old format, be strong! I will be coming back to that format for at least the whole of the final week (to see how a month's practice may have changed the menu/approach!). I will also do this type of post every once in a while until then just to keep you updated on how the challenge is going!!

Take a deep breath, we are treading new ground!

Today's post will be short but not without meaning. I got into an interesting conversation with some friends after yoga this morning (I seem to be talking about food a lot these days!). Some of the topics really struck home as I think they raise questions anyone who loves food will at some point confront. Here are the ones that stood out:

- The ethics behind vegetarianism and meat eating - Is there a right and wrong?
- If everyone on the planet ate 'paleo', would it be possible to sustain? (i.e. how do you come up with that much meat?)
- The historical impact of the practice of agriculture, both in human and planetary terms.
- Tradition and how it affects our habits today.

Now if these type of topics and questions normally give you headaches, don't worry, you don't have to answer them!! They won't be in the final exam! If I may share, one thing this challenge has imparted on me so far is that becoming conscious of what you eat and learning how it affects your body and health is an empowering experience. I'll say that again. *James Earl Jones voice* It gives you power! Let's face it, as much as it would be cool, we just aren't going to get 'spider-man' or 'superman' level power in this lifetime, but this type of power, as my friend Travis would put it, it's not too shabby! It is amazing and liberating to consider food items and make conscious choices about why YOU are eating them. Whether you are vegetarian, meat eating, vegan or whatever type of robot Stephen Harper is, you will get a kick out of this kind of power.

Week 2!!!! Let's Do This!! aka What We've Learned So Far

*Special Announcement* 

No food update for Day 8! I will, however, include the day summary at the end of the post! This is to dedicate more time to the creation of a proper recap post.... just like the ones from the old days!

... And Then There Was Recap

So I would like to start would by voicing a few thoughts before I head into the randomness that is my view of the world. I've been really enjoying the experience of undertaking the paleo challenge so far. Although it is taxing time wise and it is one heck of a challenge, I feel supported by those around me and also, that I am doing something thoroughly good for myself... it feels right. I am especially grateful for the response I have gotten from all of you who have graciously taken the time to read, and consequently tolerate, the smorgasbord that is my lyrical thought-chewing. Finally, thanks to all the paleo-ninjas this adventure has introduced me to who have been generous in offering useful ideas and moral support.

To you all, this is for you!

Verdict: Insightful, sensible and yet, primitive. I highly recommend it to all of who are nostalgic for the old days when bashing a girl over the head and taking her to your cave was the height of romance.

FOODS I MISS

Mike from the 5 Star Panel asked me what were the foods I missed so far in the challenge.. here is my answer:
- Although some foods definitely jump out at me when I see them, what I really miss is the ease of eating whatever. Being conscious about everything I eat is the MOST challenging part. Also, organizing my time to get it done. That being said, I miss Poutine!!! haha, not really but kinda :)

MY POWERFUL INTENTIONS REVISITED

Here they are, the list has grown!!

1. Learn more about nutrition and what kind of impact it can have on my day to day life.
2. Offer some information and, hopefully, some inspiration to those of you who have similar inclinations.
3. Take over the world.
3. Show partially naked pictures of myself on the internet.
3. Become a force of nature!! Yesssssssssss
4. Learn some new things along the way (Top 3: photography, photoshop, cooking)
5.- Accept all forms of eating as part of life and be comprehensive with people and critters who do not share your way of being. (Thank you goofy looking muffin squirrel)
6. Be balanced and, when I need it, take a day off.

FALSE PROMISES aka SO PETE YOU PROMISE NUDITY AND THEN, THERE IS NO NUDITY?!!?? SERIOUSLY WTF DUDE??

My answer to this is that I did not promise nudity per se, I simply mentioned there would be talk of nudity. Important question ahead!! I am officially taking idea suggestions for my next before/after picture series. You liked the Red Star/Aviator/Striped Boxer thing but would rather a less communist look?? Have an idea that you think would rock? I'm all ears!! 

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED - WHAT I WILL IMPLEMENT

What I've learned:
- Going from free for all to paleo is challenging! Planning and good resources for support are key!
- Spaghetti Squash = Not so mysterious after all
- Eating Paleo is paleo frikin' delicious. I am thoroughly enjoying every meal and the reality is, when you can't eat things like pasta, bread, poutine, yoghourt... things that you have craved and enjoyed in the past, your body adapts. You start dreaming about that vegetable stir-fry and your mouth foams up at the thought of heading out to the spice store. Funny how life works sometimes.
What I will implement:
- Sleep! Sleep is important! I will sleep morzzzzzzzzz
- Be real about budgeting. Find a balance here once this month is over and I have all the appliances and side products I need!
- Make it social: Get my friends involved in some of my meals to make it more fun-tastic.

Day7 - Die Rodrigo!!

Don't fret! Rodrigo is not the name of my pet fish, tarantula or turtle (turtles are awesome), nor is it some poor chap who cut me off on the highway. Rodrigo is this little fella':


That's right! It was time to take down the Spaghetti Squash!! If the title still makes you queasy.. uhh... it was a typo! Please add a 't' after 'Die'!

Last day of week 1! Yessss, definitely an eye opening week, big learning experience. I'll be posting the highlights of which in the special first entry of Week 2!

Meal 1: Leftovas'
What: Roasted Grouper, carrot and zucchini sautéed in olive oil and cumin and some berries.
Verdict: Breakfast of Champions.


This was actually a late breakfast as I had done the early morning Mysore yoga class at Sattva Yoga Shala with Darby and Joanne. I'd like to take the time to send them a very warm shout out. They are the passionate practitioners who opened this one of a kind studio. Their love and dedication to yoga is amazingly strong and has fountained down into every nook and cranny of the place which has become a second home to Ashtanga (and life) enthusiasts such as myself! You both are inspiring! Namaste!

On that note, lets get through the meals of the day!

Meal 2: Smoothie!
What: Banana-Strawberry-Egg-Kiwi Smoothie!

Served with: Nuts! - Walnuts to be exact

Meal 3: Scrambled Eggs a la Pete
What: 2 eggs, red onion, leftover carrot and zucchini from the morning sautéed in olive oil and coconut milk. Topped with pecans.
Verdict: Really tasty and was a surprise meal! I got reaaaalllly hungry in the pm.

AND THEN.....


BEFORE KILL BILL THERE WAS.... KILL RODRIGO!!!!


Meal #4: Rodrigo!
Scene one - Pete and Rodrigo
Location - Kitchen
Action!!
"Hey Rodrigo did you listen to that mixed tape I made for you?"

"Yeah man it sucked"

"Wha??"

"Yeah and I saw that girl you find cute at that place... you don't have a chance son!!"

"... ..."

*SCHLING*

"Wait why did you look at that knife right now and then at me doing the weird face.... "

"Die Rodrigo!"
"NOOOO DUDDDEEEE not cool..."



The Delicious Result:
 What: Spaghetti squash noodles after roasting in the stove 45 minutes.

What: Noodles topped with tomato and avocado and garlic sizzled olive oil.
Verdict: Blew my mind!! Who knew arguments could lead to such deliciousness!
Side Note: I put a TON of garlic in the oil. To those of which who tolerated my particular natural fragrance over the evening....  I salute you.

I capped off the night at Upstairs for my sister's official B-Day celebration. Upstairs also happens to me a local jazz scene where all the cool cats hang out and the star of the night was my bro-in-law, the one and only G-G-Giovanni! If you guys ever get the chance to see him live, jump on it!! He's the real deal! This guy hands out tasty saxophone solos like Santa hands out presents at the good kid table.

Ingredients:
- Protein: fish, eggs, nuts
- Veggies: Rodrigo, tomato, avocado, carrot, zucchini
- Fruit: Strawberry, blackberry (I prefer iPhone myself but lets not get into that) , banana, kiwi,
- Fats: olive oil, coconut oil
- Other: garlic, cumin

Budget = 20$ for eggs and nuts

Hours slept = 7
